Jewellery Shopping on a Budget by Ian Tubby
When economic times are hard it makes sense to plan your budget and not waste money on impulse buys you might later regret. But using your money wisely doesn’t mean you have to give up all of life’s luxuries.
Take jewellery, for example. Although a new necklace isn’t a necessity, with the prices of gold and other precious materials still rising, it could be classed as a worthwhile investment. And if you balance the purchase price against the many years of pleasure a piece of fine jewellery can give, and all the precious memories that will become associated with it, you might decide the expense is worth every penny.
Look for lasting value
Buying a cheap piece of jewellery isn’t a bargain if you only wear it a few times. Take your time to find something you know you’ll want to wear again and again. Buy the best quality you can afford and avoid gimmicky jewellery that will quickly go out of fashion.
Consider the versatility of a piece. Will it look good worn with lots of different clothes? Is it suitable for many occasions? If you want a pair of earrings to wear with an evening dress your first thought might be to choose a long, dangling design with gemstones that perfectly match the vibrant colour of the dress. They’ll look stunning, but only with that particular dress. A smaller design in plain gold or silver would still be attractive but you’d also be able to wear them during the day.
Sell to buy
If you’d love to treat yourself – or someone else – to some new jewellery, but your budget won’t allow it, take a good look at the pieces you already own. Do you have any old, broken or damaged pieces that you no longer wear? That old-fashioned brooch could be a sought-after vintage piece to someone else. The scrap value of a broken gold bracelet or a ring with a missing stone might be a very pleasant surprise! Take any jewellery you don’t want to a reputable local independent jeweller who you can trust to give you a fair price for it. Then use the money to buy something you do want.
Recycle and renew
Another way to obtain new jewellery from old is by having pieces remodelled by a skilled independent jeweller. Gemstones can be put into more modern settings; a large necklace could be turned into a smaller necklace with a matching bracelet. It’s a great way of giving new life to jewellery with sentimental value that you don’t want to part with although you wouldn’t wear it in its original design.
If you’re looking for some new jewellery don’t be afraid to tell the friendly staff in your local independent jewellers that you have a limited budget. Not all of their customers are millionaires! They’ll be happy to advise you on the best options within your price range without pressurising you to spend more than you can afford.
